Interview with the Owner of DuBois Formalwear
This month, we sat down with the Owner of DuBois Formalwear, Jim DuBois, to ask a few questions about his time with the company, what he attributes to his success and what advice he would give to a young entrepreneur.
When did you start working for DuBois Formalwear?
I officially started on the payroll in May of 1980. Of course, since my parents owned the business, I started a little earlier without getting paid. My mom would drop me off at the plant when she had an appointment and I would help my dad by shining shoes or whatever else he could think of for a 7 year old to do.
When did you become owner of DuBois Formalwear?
1989 is the year our parents sold the business. It was sold to me, my brothers Dan and Richard, and my sister Amy. The four of us ran different parts of the business, including the wholesale division, marketing, bridal and administrative.
In 1998, both Dan and Richard moved on to pursue their personal desires. Amy and I ran the business together through 2013, until Amy decided to move on to pursue other interests. Today, I’m the sole owner. I have been involved in the business over 41 years and have owned it for 32 years.
What is the best part of your job?
Everyone I work with, I continue to learn and everyone has an opinion that’s different. We are not too big to make a change midstream, we are very agile and quick to move when necessary. Another great thing is the size of the company, I get to meet and know each and every one of the people who work for DuBois.
To what do you attribute your success?
Absolutely, without a doubt, being heavily involved in the day-to-day business operations is what makes a successful business owner. I have done every possible job within the company, including shining shoes and sweeping floors. I’ve learned so much from all the people I have worked with, both inside and outside the company. Another big part of my success is that I’m always learning new things and adapting to new outlooks and ways of doing things. I pride myself on being teachable.
What role do you play within the company?
I mostly work in the wholesale division. Calling on accounts, and showing them what’s new. I also do training for brand new accounts, who have not done tuxedo rentals before. When we are very busy, I will help in the plant to expedite orders, or whatever else it takes to get the job done. I also enjoy working the bridal shows, talking with customers and answering their questions.
If you had one piece of advice for an entrepreneur just starting out, what would it be?
Try not to give up, always be there, lead by example and listen to the people you have around you. Your people are the most valuable asset. Keep an open mind. Change is good!
